The artists who chose painting as their principal medium didn’t express prejudices or concerns about the past traditions. Instead, painting was then considered to be an all-new medium.

Impacted by the invention of photography and new media technology, painting has undergone a lot of twists and turns in the development of modern art. One of the more obvious negative assumptions is that painting represents old traditions and systems of art, which resulted in modern artists’ resistance to the medium. Even so, a thinker as profound as Martin Heidegger believed that paintings could still deeply portrays human nature; moreover, in the art market, paintings remain the top option for collectors. In the “Borderless Map: Taiwanese Painting Now.” exhibition, we invite you to see how Generation Y painters from a high-technology island – Taiwan -- decide to express their point of view, their thoughts, and their faith on canvas.

The featured painters in this exhibition were born in the late 1970s and the 1980s. They were raised in a time when martial law had just been lifted in Taiwan. They grew up in the chaotic world of media after censorship had been relaxed, and they engaged with the information brought on by technological advancement. For these artists, the world map consists not just of countries with specific names, but also a virtual society without real borders. Growing up in a highly entertaining popular culture and explosive information era, this generation has developed a new lifestyle, which includes new procedures for creating new content.

Taiwanese curator Lin Hsiao-Yu singles out the word “microcosm” as the most common term denoting the young Taiwanese artists’ creative traits. The younger generation has switched their themes from mapping the macro-environment and political issues to portray personal memories, private visual experiences, and the development of art symbols that are individualistic and highly identifiable, eventually bringing recognition to the artists.

ChienJen Chiu, YaTing Kao, Jean HuaChen Huang and LiangYin Wang observe people and objects around them and demonstrate a sense of freedom, as well as personal emotional and private thoughts in their paintings. Tabo TaiChun Chao, Along ChingYuan Chen pay special attention to the particular scene in Taiwan and transfer the events and role into the comic style paintings. Goody Yiji Hsin expresses herself with an imagination linked to the animals and fairy tale stories, and Juju YinLing Hsu’s art exudes a sense of deficiency and anxiety, made clear through deliberately dreary compositions. Both of them reveal people’s sense of insecurity, brought about by the instability of life, future, and society.

Even though the argument about painting’s being an antiquated form of art has not gone away, the artists in “Borderless Map: Taiwanese Painting Now” are intent on emphasizing a painterly sensibility. Whether or not the artists are aware of their own observation methods, which consist of illustrating and even magnifying their everyday life, is up to the viewer to decide. In actuality, they convey a sharp self-dialectics and social observation. These are among the important characteristics of this generation.

In "Our Drawing Event", we want to bring the casual but serious time to all the artists and friends who want to draw. Every month, we host free drawing event in artist Brad Darcy's art studio on 80 Beaver Street in downtown Wall Street area.

Following is the policy for our event,

1. Participating artists pose for 10-15 mins for everyone to draw.

(Each pose will be 2 min to 5 mins.)

2. Bring your own drawing tool.

3. Bring some snack or drink for share if you want. (We have cup and opener!)

"Invisible Stranger" Exhibition

The “Invisible Stranger” examines the relationship of the familiar and unfamiliar through geography and culture in a series of work created by local Berlin artists as well as international artists. The exhibition is a joint project by Tamtam8, where it will be running from September 10 to October 10, 2010 and by secondhome projects alongside the Berlin Art Fair in October 7 to 10, 2010.

The title “Invisible Stranger” is borrowed from German sociologist Georg Simmel, who wrote the essay 'The Stranger' that states, "The Stranger is close to us, insofar as we feel between him and ourselves common features of a national, social, occupational, or generally human, nature. He is far from us, insofar as these common features extend beyond him or us, and connect us only because they connect a great many people. “[1]

The 'Invisible Stranger' aims to bring together life experiences both foreign and familiar into the artistic realm in order to expand our dialogue and enrich our perspective of the world we all inhabit. In this digital age of rapidly advancing technology, omnipresent connectivity, visual stimuli and increasing mobility, we are constantly exposed to strange new places and strange new people that shape us all in familiar as well as strange and mysterious ways.

Michael Alan creates moments in time that overlap drawing, painting, sculpture, music and video. They inspire live performance and installation happenings. All of his work begins with drawings. These drawings serve as the foundation for his installations, performances, and videos. Working with a team of performers, Alan assembles living installations where all these creative elements merge.

Harmonious Opposites is about the beauty of balance in a state of extreme cultural and artistic change. It includes large and small works on paper and wood panel, a video installation, and on the closing night, Thursday July 29th, a 6 hour Living Installation performance entitled, "Cleaning the Clouds". The public is invited to come watch, participate, draw, and write at this performance.

A celebration of movement, Harmonious Opposites explores the act of occupying and embodying multiple spaces at once, without confusion. The creative process behind it reflects this idea. Pushing the boundaries of drawing, painting, and performance, it dissects and amplifies, samples, and distorts media and bodies with a touch of pretty.

Art Sync is a creative collaboration between artists from two different countries as well as a comprehensive study of the efforts and means used during this unique collaborate process. It is an experience of comparison and compromise between the individual and the collective work ethic. Art Sync was initiated by selecting four artists from both Taiwan and New York. A classic formalism is more strongly presented in the selected Taiwanese artists’ work while the New York artists exude a more expressionistic paradigm. The alternate working methods in addition to the different cultural backgrounds of the artists give this collaborative synchronization a richer and more diverse palette to work from.

Art Sync will house works created under a diversity of circumstances: solo and collaborative works, collaborative efforts created during the Art Sync process as well as an in-depth chronology of direct communication among all artists involved. The participating artist teams are Fanny Allié & Hoho Lin, Eric Bessel & Kai-Yuan Tszen, Brad Darcy & Yu-San Huang and MaryKate Maher & Yin-Ling Chin.

The Exhibition is received the grants from Taiwan Cultural Affairs as the first place of the international exhibition.

In “Food: A History”, historian Felipe Fernandez-Armesto wrote “I eat therefore I am. People recognize the whole world through the dinner table, the food on the plate reveals the secret of human history. Food stories not only relate to culinary subjects but also connect to the culture.” Artists develop self consciousness, and expand their observation of the environment during art production. In the exhibition “Open Kitchen”, artists have chosen food and diet as the art subjects to create a common language between different cultures, as well as the personal link between individuals. “Open Kitchen” welcomes the viewer to share artists’ stories, and the opportunity through food to experience a multicultural view of the world. Sixteen artists from Asian, American, and Latin American backgrounds, present their experience of food and world cuisine.

Exhibition will include the drawing, painting, sculpture, installation, video, mix-media, and photography from Meredith Allen, SungHo Choi, Yi-Chang Chen, Brad Darcy, Colette Fu, Hyoungsun Ha, Rex Hausmann, Tamara Kostianovsky, Ho-Jang Liu, I-Hua Lee, Elaine Tin Nyo, Trong G.Nguyen, Morgan O'Hara, Michael Pribich, Bruce Richards and special performance from Kai-Yuan Tszen at 6:30pm.

The Da Gallery, New York’s newest international art gallery, is proud to announce its inaugural exhibition: “Colored Glasses,” celebrating the fresh Spring season of 2010. The exhibition features vivid, multicolored artwork in different mediums, including drawing, painting, photography, sculpture and multimedia. Twenty-four international artists come together to express the abstract fantasy and tangible realities within the context of aesthetic elements. Chashama is pleased to announce the upcoming two person exhibition which presents Brooklyn-based artist Alex White Mazzarella (Mazza) and his renowned great grandfather Italian artist Giuseppe Andriani. The show is named “Beyond the Line” which not only exhibits the art works from two different centuries but also celebrate the artistic blood passed down between generations. In the “Beyond the Line”, Mazza will reveal his paintings from the recent body of work “Remixing Media to Remix Reality” alongside a retrospective of his great grandfather Andriani.
Building upon today’s street art and the neo-expressionism of the 80’s, Mazza’s mixed media paintings are fun yet provocative commentaries and assertions on todays’ age and culture. They are abstract spontaneous explosions of color and line that mix illustration with painting. In the 8 foot “Becoming Bubble Gum”, a seemingly punk baby morphed into an Alice in Wonderland type creature comes at the viewer along with an iconic language and provocative script. By mixing texture, photograph, paint and charcoal, Mazza creates his imagery amidst raw and alive surfaces that look to communicate the life embedded in city walls and surfaces.
Giuseppe Andriani, who was born in Lecce (Puglia) in 1864 and died in Florence in 1948, dedicated his entire life to art. Influenced by Antonio Piccini, a famous engraver of 1800 in Italy, his repertoire of drawings, acqueforti (etchings), punte secche (dry point etchings) oil paintings and watercolors depicted scenes of his everyday life and surroundings. His sketches of the original Florence bridges which are destroyed by WW II bring back to life Ponte alla Carraia, Ponte Scandicci, Ponte Santa Trinita and Ponte alla Vittoria. Rome’s Fine Arts Academy, the Society of Fine Arts and the International Black and White Expo…etc have honored Andriani’s works.

Transformed Conversation

Two person exhibition "Transformed Conversation" with New York based artist Brad Darcy and Burma based artist Chaw Ei Thein. In "Transformed Conversation", Mr. Darcy and Ms Chaw Ei Thein explore the artist's self conscious role in the engagement of social and political issues, and the responsibility to communicate perspectives on an aesthetic level.

Mr. Darcy has been concentrating on human evolution as the central theme of his work, and for "Transformed Conversation" his exploration consists of abstracted cyclical interpretations. Through sketches, animations, and paintings, his physically charged lines and manipulated imagery touch on various themes including mass media, connectivity, as well as natural phenomena.

Ms Chaw Ei Thein explores political truths of her native country, Burma. Assimilating current Burmese realities, her sculptures are dedicated to those who have suffered political repression and human rights abuses. In her latest work, "Bed", Chaw Ei Thein transforms her bittersweet memories and emotions of her exiled hometown into a meditative installation.
